The Ashanti Regional President of Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) Mr Ebenezer Essilifie is advocating the establishment of a college or training school for mortuary workers in Ghana
According to Mr Ebenezer Essilifie, When the college is established, it would train people with scientific knowledge to handle dead bodies in the country and deviate from the current norm where prospective employees only need to be courageous.
Speaking in an interview on a local TV station (AMBASSADOR TV), Mr Ebenezer Essilifie emphasized that training more people with the scientific knowledge to handle dead bodies will help reduce the high unemployment rate in the country.
According to him, the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) over the years has called on the government to build a college to train people in the field of mortuary work.
“We met government officials to discuss with them the reason why the government should build a college for mortuary workers and the government assured us that measures will be put in place to address our demand” he explained.
“People have the perception that mortuary work is for illiterate but now we have processors, lecturers and people with Ph.D. as mortuary workers”. He revealed.
“There is no way a president, minister or people with a high profile will die and their bodies will be transferred from Ghana to foreign countries for preservation. We the workers in Ghana will be working on their bodies so sometimes our leaders should listen to our concerns and address them” he added.
“When the college for mortuary workers is ready, people will go there and acquire the scientific knowledge, get their certificates and come to the field to work and it will address the perception of some Ghanaians that mortuary work is for illiterates”.
