Feyiase, a small but significant community in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, is undergoing a transformative journey that seeks to celebrate its rich history while paving the way for future development. “The history of the Ashanti-Denkyira war would never be complete without the mention of Feyiase,” shares Nana Addae Gyamera I, the Chief of Feyiase, in an exclusive interview with Ashantibiz News.
Historic Significance
Nestled in Kumasi, Feyiase is renowned as a historic battleground from the Ashanti-Denkyira war, which erupted in 1699. The name “Feyiase” derives from the “Feyi” tree, a gathering point for Ashanti warriors who converged there to strategize and rest during the conflict. The continual assembly under this prominent tree eventually led to the town’s name—Feyiase, meaning “the place under the Feyi tree.”
The legacy of Feyiase is further enriched by the contributions of Okomfo Anokye, a revered priest and military leader whose strategies played a pivotal role in the war. Today, the area is marked by several historic sites associated with Okomfo Anokye, including the renowned Okomfo Anokye Cola Tree, the Okomfo Anokye Creeks, and the Cow Place, where a cow was reportedly buried alive as part of his mystical practices.
A Vision for Development
In a bid to attract tourists and investors, Nana Addae Gyamera I is advocating for the revitalization of these historic sites. “All the historic sites are currently under consideration for a facelift to enhance their appeal,” he states. This commitment to heritage preservation is coupled with ambitious plans for community development.
The Chief has outlined several key projects to improve Feyiase’s infrastructure, including the construction of a new lorry station, market, police station, and additional junior and senior high schools. As part of this initiative, the District Assembly has officially designated Wednesdays as market day once the marketplace is completed.
Moreover, attention has been directed toward improving access roads and installing streetlights to enhance safety and connectivity within the community. To support these efforts, local landlords and landowners have pledged an annual contribution of GH₵150 (approximately $12.50) to fund these infrastructure improvements.
A Call to Unity
Nana Addae Gyamera I emphasizes the importance of collective action for the development of Feyiase. “I call on all indigenes of Feyiase to come together to help build our community,” he urges. This spirit of unity is vital as Feyiase seeks not only to honor its historical roots but also to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
As Feyiase continues its journey of renewal, it stands as a testament to the resilience of its people and the richness of Ashanti history. With ongoing development projects and a commitment to preserving its cultural heritage, Feyiase is poised to become a vibrant hub for both residents and visitors alike in the years to come.
