A total of One hundred and twenty (120) recipients have received trainings and supported with start-up inputs for beekeeping in the Upper East and Upper West Regions.
These items include one hundred and twenty (120) beehives with metal stands and other beekeeping accessories.
The beneficiaries are drawn from various Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), Youth and other community groups in the Talensi District, Bawku West District, Builsa South District and Sissala East Municipal.
The selected bee keepers made up of thirty six males and eighty four females received trainings on the basics of beekeeping including; importance of bees, historical methods of beekeeping, hive management, marketing, among many others.
They also received some inputs including overall, veils, wellington boots, gloves, harvesting tools and harvesting buckets.
A Livelihood Support Officer, Rocha Ghana, Mr. Pasor Seidu, said, “as bee keepers, we need to install the beehives not far from our farms where they can pollinate the crops we cultivate. So at the end of the day, they will have a lot of food and enough of honey to consume.”
Mr. Seidu added, “So today we just distributed some beehives to them and the installation has been done.”
It is estimated that these groups can averagely produce 1,000 litters of honey and process 200kg of Wax when well managed.
The objective is to provide households with supplementary income during the dry season which will intend curb some environmental destruction such as bush burning and cutting of trees during the process of honey harvesting.
A mangazia of the Yameriga Bee Keepers told GBC News that the support they are receiving from the Sahel Project would go a long way to provide economic opportunities for them.
“We are grateful to Sahel for identifying the Yameriga Community and giving us this livelihood support. It is our hope that we monitor these beehives and in six months time, we reap the benefits.”
The intervention is under the IUCN led project known as “Creating Land of Opportunities: Transforming Livelihoods through landscape restoration in the Sahel”.
The project is being funded by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transitions through the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) – Global Mechanism with implementation in Ghana, Burkina Faso and Niger.
