Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo is part of the Pensioners and individual Bondholders Forum who are picketing at the Finance Ministry

Individual Bondholders have been picketing at the Finance Ministry this week to force the Finance Minister to exempt them from Government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

A 15%coupon rate has been proposed by the government but these pensioners say they will not agree to the haircut by government.

They argue that their livelihood depends on it and will not give in to any demands made by the Government of Ghana.

In videos on various media platforms, the former Chief Justice was seen singing solemnly and drumming home their message to the Finance Minister who seems adamant on his position.

“When you are in pension and you know where every penny you spend comes from, sentiments does not arise. It is what is right that matters. The years we’ve got left by God’s grace let us live those years,” she said in an interview with Accra-based Citi TV.

She continued “After many years of working faithfully they should leave us to enjoy the rest of the years we have on our own terms, I think everybody here and every person has worked faithfully. We should allow faithfulness, principles, excellence, we should allow it to be. Even if the government will not allow it to be, people have invested their faith and their excellence and you want to throw it away because you think you can? No, you can’t.
