Ghana Premier League outfit Karela United Football Club have suspended one of its players over accusations of sexual abuse involving a teenager.
Following a report made by the victim’s father, the suspect was remanded into police custody on Wednesday.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the club confirmed the suspension of the player, whose identity was withheld, pending the conclusion of the ongoing police investigation.
The statement further noted that the club’s management will await the court’s final decision on the case before making a conclusive decision on the player’s future at the club.
“The Club will not condone any form of violence, especially against women. We stand with the victim and her family and will fully cooperate with the police and other relevant authorities to ensure justice is served,” the club said.
According to the Ellembelle District Social Welfare Officer, Jonas Kabutey, the suspect admitted to defiling the girl and has been remanded to appear in court a week later.
“At the court, he confessed to defiling the girl. He alleges the victim lured him into committing the act. He has been remanded to reappear a week later,” Kabutey said in an interview with Takoradi-based Connect FM on Wednesday.
