The streets of Kumasi were alive with music and color as tens of thousands of people gathered to celebrate the 25th Jubilee of the Akwasidae Festival of the Asante Kingdom.
This harvest festival marks the ascension of the Asantehene to the Golden Stool and honours Asante culture. This year held special significance as it commemorated 25 years of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s leadership.
The highlight is the vibrant parade through Kumasi to Manhyia Palace.
Over 1000 participants dressed in exquisite kente cloth representing various Asante clans and divisions. Intricate patterns in red, yellow, green and blue displayed Asante symbols.
When the procession arrived at the palace, traditional leaders from across Asanteman assembled in their finery. Otumfuo then emerged from the palace wearing dazzling kente befitting his status.
Cultural performances showcased Asante folklore through dance, music, poetry and drama. For those present, it was an affirmation of their identity as proud Asantes after centuries of thriving culture.
This 25th Jubilee will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most spectacular Akwasidae festivals celebrating the vibrant traditions of the Asante nation.
