The rising tide of street hawking in Kumasi: A call for action

Kumasi, known for its rich culture and history, has been experiencing a significant increase in street hawking in recent years. The sight of youths and even school-going children selling various items on major streets like Abrepo Junction, Abuakwa Maakro, Sofo Line, Tafo Pankrono Highway, Tech Oforikrom Highway, Suame Highway, and others, has become a common scene.

These young entrepreneurs sell a variety of items, ranging from bread, yogurt, reflectors, soft drinks, sachet water, and many more. While their spirit of enterprise is commendable, the reality is that street hawking exposes them to numerous risks and hazards.

Street hawking is particularly precarious for nursing mothers, physically challenged people who beg for alms, minors, and the unconcerned attitude of security agencies who only act after something unfortunate has happened. For nursing mothers, the grueling nature of street vending and the lack of adequate facilities for breastfeeding can pose significant health risks to both the mother and child. Physically challenged individuals who engage in street hawking often face additional challenges, including physical exhaustion and exposure to the elements.

The most vulnerable group, however, are the children. Many of these school-going children abandon their education to engage in street hawking, thereby jeopardizing their future prospects. The long hours spent on the streets also expose them to various forms of abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.

The increasing trend of street hawking in Kumasi can be attributed to various factors. The high rate of unemployment and poverty in the region forces many youths to resort to street hawking as a means of survival. The lack of accessible and affordable markets for small businesses also drives many to the streets. Furthermore, the ineffective enforcement of laws and regulations against street hawking contributes to its proliferation.

The situation calls for a multi-faceted approach to address the root causes of street hawking. The government, in collaboration with local authorities, needs to prioritize the creation of jobs and the provision of affordable markets for small businesses. This can be achieved through the implementation of policies that promote entrepreneurship, vocational training, and access to credit facilities.

The enforcement of laws and regulations against street hawking should be strengthened, with a focus on protecting the most vulnerable groups. This includes the establishment of dedicated teams to monitor and enforce these laws, as well as the provision of alternative sources of income for those engaged in street hawking.

The rising tide of street hawking in Kumasi is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive solution. By addressing the root causes of this phenomenon and implementing effective policies, we can ensure the safety, well-being, and future prospects of our youths and the city as a whole.
