NDC’s Prof Naana Opoku Agyemang: A quiet contender for Vice Presidency

  • Post category:Politics

With the 2024 general elections on the horizon, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is counting on its vice presidential candidate, Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang, to bolster its chances of unseating the incumbent government. However, her relatively low profile has sparked questions about her ability to match the impact of her New Patriotic Party (NPP) counterpart, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

Prof. Agyemang has adopted a more subdued approach compared to other running mates in recent elections. While NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has been actively campaigning, she has remained largely out of the spotlight. Some observers have interpreted this as a lack of engagement, while others believe it is a deliberate strategy to avoid controversies and focus on the party’s message.

Both Prof. Agyemang and Dr. Prempeh have served as Ministers of Education, providing a common ground for comparison. Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang, a renowned academic, held the position from 2013 to 2017, while Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh served from 2017 to 2021. Both have implemented significant education reforms during their tenures.

Prof. Agyemang has a long history in academia and civil society but is relatively new to mainstream politics. Her selection as Vice President is seen as an attempt to appeal to women voters and intellectuals. Dr. Prempeh, a physician, has been active in politics for over two decades and enjoys a strong following among NPP supporters.

Her quiet demeanor and expertise in education could complement Mahama’s charisma and political experience. However, her lack of political clout may limit her ability to mobilize support for the NDC.

Napo’s political savvy and experience in government affairs could enhance Dr. Bawumia’s economic credentials. His appeal to the youth and working class may also help the NPP break the eight-year electoral cycle.

The Akufo-Addo legacy, particularly the performance of Vice President Dr. Bawumia, will play a significant role in influencing voter perception. If the public views the current government favorably, it could boost Dr. Bawumia’s chances of becoming President.

The running mates of the NDC and NPP, Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang and Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, bring diverse experiences and strengths to their respective campaigns. While Agyemang has a quieter approach, Prempeh is a more visible and politically engaged figure. The outcome of the 2024 general elections will hinge on how effectively these individuals can complement their flagbearers and appeal to the Ghanaian electorate.
