Nana Opia Mensah, the current Werempehene, faces potential destoolment after losing an eligibility case at the Manhyia Palace. The Werempe Stool, a pivotal position overseeing several major towns, has been at the center of a dispute between the Aduana and Oyoko clans.
Nana Opia Mensah, who has held the stool for 51 years, was challenged by members of the Oyoko clan from Juaben, who asserted their rightful ownership of the position. In response, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II established a committee to investigate the claims.
On August 15, 2024, the committee presented its findings, recommending that the stool be returned to the Oyoko family, deemed the rightful owners. Following the recommendation, the Asantehene ordered the transfer of the stool to the Oyoko clan.
Nana Opia Mensah was fined eight sheep by the court for providing misleading information during the investigations. Speaking after the ruling, Nana Kwabena Nketia, Head of the Werempe Oyoko Family, expressed gratitude to the Asantehene for upholding the truth and pledged to await his final decision.
This development highlights the delicate balance of power and tradition in the Asante Kingdom, reminding the community of the significance of rightful ownership and integrity within their leadership structures.
