In a startling move, the Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially destooled Nana Opia Mensah, the Wirempehene, during a council meeting at Manhyia Palace on September 2, 2024. The decision follows Nana Mensah’s false assertions regarding his royal claims, which included swearing a great oath despite clear evidence to the contrary.
The aged chief appeared visibly distressed as he was rebuked by the Asantehene, who emphasized the shame brought upon the chieftaincy through such acts. “You know you were not the rightful occupant; you should never have sworn by my great oath,” Otumfuo declared, reinforcing the integrity of the throne.
This destoolment comes merely six days after the Asantehene removed three other chiefs for involvement in illegal mining activities, marking a significant crackdown on misconduct within the Ashanti traditional leadership. Akwamuhene of Sabronum has been appointed as the interim caretaker to oversee the appointment of a new chief in the region.
