A/R: Kaaka’s family rejects ‘coerced’ in-camera hearing

Family of the late Ibrahim Anyass Mohammed, popularly known on Facebook as Macho Kaaka, is rejecting an in-camera hearing expected to take place on Monday, July 12 when the three-member Ejura committee sits.

The family is also saying they were compelled by the Omanhene of Ejura to face the committee.

The family had earlier written to the George Kingsley Koomson-led committee that it would not be able to participate in the hearing process because they fell “let down in our enthusiasm for what we assumed would provide a much-needed opportunity for truth, soul searching and institutional accountability for state-sanctioned violence”.

But an uncle to the late Kaaka, whose death sparked the unrests in Ejura said: “Let me state that we were coerced to go to the hearing.”

Alhaji Inussah Bawah was spoke to the media.

“We don’t know why but we were compelled to; And now they are saying we will appear in- camera which we reject.”

According to Kaaka’s uncle, “As I said they were compelled by the chief. My problem is that Ejura is cosmopolitan even though it is Ashanti-dominated but they were divided by politics. If it is not well handled, I tell you it will bring problems”.

Alhai Bawah, who said he spoke to Kaaka’s wife on Monday morning because he himself cannot attend the meeting, said: “Even at the last sitting, the person that they said hearing was done in- camera, we don’t know what happened. In fact, for the appearing there is no problem for us but for the hearing we want it to be public.”
