Northern Sector Director of the Ghana Grid Company, Engineer Vincent Boakye has stated it is impossible to provide a load shedding timetable for residents of the Ashanti region experiencing intermittent power outages.
Engineer Boakye at a presser explained that “Until the evening when we look at the voltage, GridCo system control doesn’t know how many loads we need in Kumasi. It is when they tell ECG, that ECG will be able to know whether there will be a low load relief or not. ECG cannot give a timetable. If it does, people won’t be able to plan with it. At a peak load, there is a possibility that the light will go off, people should rather plan around that. But whether your home will be without light, GridCo doesn’t know neither does ECG, it all depends on the state of the system and the voltage.”
This comes on the back of recent demand for a timetable by residents of the region following power outages it has been experiencing for a couple of weeks.
“A communication mast collapsed and fell on the 330kV Aboadze-Kumasi transmission Line, resulting in the collapse of two adjacent towers’ ‘, a statement from the Ghana Grid Company said in a statement, adding that it happened on 15:40 GMT on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.
Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy Lawrence Asangongo Apaalse, also at the press conference in Kumasi on November 30, 2021, said the issue of power crisis is of major concern to the sector minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
“This problem in Kumasi as far as power stability is concerned has been an issue that this minister put on the drawing board as soon as he came into office. It is so persistent in the Ashanti and Northern sector.”
He added that his team is working round the clock to address the crisis.
Engineer Boakye noted that a patrol team will be instituted in areas where there are communication towers to foil future occurrences.
“Wherever a communication tower is, we are going to visit and inspect their state to make sure this doesn’t happen again. “
