A recent field survey conducted by Ashantibiz News in Kumasi has revealed significant insights into the aftermath of the recent general elections in Ghana, highlighting the electorate’s acute awareness of economic trends.
Members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), characterized by their arrogance, played a substantial role in the fall of the Akufo-Addo government. Figures like the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Ashanti Regional Party Chairman, the Communications Minister, the Interior Minister, the Adansi Asokwa Member of Parliament, and other prominent spokespersons have been perceived as ineffective communicators—boastful, arrogant, and bullying. Their behavior undoubtedly contributed to the NPP’s electoral defeat.
What was anticipated to be a straightforward victory for the NPP shifted dramatically in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) due to economic concerns that citizens had been voicing long before the elections. Despite these warnings, the government chose to ignore them, culminating in their downfall.
Now, the pressing question is: will the newly elected NDC government fulfill its promises? Key commitments include the cancellation of ex-gratia payments, the repeal of the e-levy, the removal of COVID-19 taxation, the reduction of high-interest rates, the expansion of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) services, the completion of abandoned projects, providing free tertiary education for first-year students, and the expansion of free Senior High School (SHS) education.
Ghanaians are eagerly watching to see whether the new Mahama government will deliver on these promises. Only time will tell if they will honor their commitments or follow in the footsteps of their predecessors.
