In a significant move to enhance cancer care in West Africa, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially commenced the construction of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence (CCCoE) in Kwaso, Ejisu municipality, Ashanti region. The sod-cutting ceremony took place on October 11, 2024, and was represented by Otumfuo Hiahene Nana Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II.

The ambitious project spans 52 acres and is estimated to require an investment of $100 million, funded through partnerships involving Breast Care International (BCI), Peace and Love Hospitals, Global Health Catalyst, and the University of Pennsylvania. The first phase, with a budget of $10 million, will feature essential clinical services, a research wing, an AI hub, education center, and community outreach programs aimed at cancer awareness and prevention.

Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI and CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals, emphasized the center’s potential to revolutionize cancer care not only in Ghana but also across the African continent, significantly reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad. With cutting-edge technology and comprehensive services, the CCCoE is poised to transform how cancer patients receive care from diagnosis to rehabilitation.

In support of this monumental initiative, Prof. Will Ngwa, founder of Global Health Catalyst, urged Ghanaians to collaborate in making the center a reality, highlighting the importance of local partnerships in the battle against cancer.

Commitments were made by Otumfuo Hiahene and the Asantehene Foundation to support this endeavor financially, pledging $100,000 over five years, alongside additional yearly contributions.

The comprehensive cancer center is expected to create over 250 jobs and will feature advanced facilities including chemotherapy suites, research laboratories, and state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.
