The frequent occurrence of armed robbers attacking police officers on duty in the Ashanti Region is becoming an alarming issue. The Ashanti Regional Police Command suffers the loss of its men on a monthly basis due to these attacks.
One cannot help but question if this can be attributed to inadequate training and intelligence gathering or the lack of proper resources to support the front-line work. It seems to validate the public’s perception that some senior police officers appear unconcerned about the loss of their personnel, while the government shows little interest in equipping the police force to effectively protect the country.
Various incidents have been reported nationwide, with the Ashanti Region ranking highest in terms of armed confrontations between robbers and police officers on duty. The recent incident in Ejura resulted in the unfortunate death of a police officer.
These national issues, which have been woefully ignored, will soon prompt influential individuals such as ministers, government officials, and prominent figures to express condolences to the grieving families of the fallen officers. It is disheartening to note that little to no attention is given to the premature deaths of officers while the nation revels in political debates and focuses on personalities who control financial resources.
There is a growing concern that immediate action must be taken to properly equip front-line security personnel, enabling them to carry out their responsibilities in a professional manner.
