By-election to be declared in Dome Kwabenya barring unforseen interventions

  • Post category:Politics

Ashantibiz.com can authoritatively confirm that  the seat held by the Member of Parliament of Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo will be declared vacant barring any unforeseen interventions.

This is after the embattled MP and Gender Minister failed to appear before the Privileges Committee to explain her extended absence from Parliament running over several months since last year. A Zoom link was provided to her to join proceedings but the MP failed to appear despite several attempts made by the Committee to get her to do so. She also did not send in word of why she couldn’t make it.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin had tasked the Privileges Committee of Parliament to engage MPs Adwoa Safo, Kennedy Agyapong and Henry Quartey over complaints of absenteeism brought against them.

The trio are expected to explain their absence, failing which actions may be taken to remove them from Parliament. The two males appeared and from all indications, acquitted themselves well with supporting documentations to prove their case while Adwoa Safo failed to appear.

Her removal is expected to generate controversy on the floor of Parliament but the majority is likely to prevail.

Personal issues

It is believed that the Dome Kwabenya MP is facing series of personal issues, marital challenges with her most recent husband, even bordering on alleged fraud. She also reportedly suffered postpartum depression and was made to sought psychological help to overcome the trauma of her marriage and ill health.

Sources say several attempts even from her own father to have her appear and put the past behind her has proven futile. Another group claim the spark of the entire controversy was President Akufo-Addo’s decision to reinstate Gertrude Quarshigah as School Feeding Program boss after Adwoa Safo had sacked her.

The two women are said to have irreconcilable differences which the President failed to address before issuing the counter-order. Since then, the Minister disappeared from duty. Close relations said it was within that period that her other personal issues came up keeping her holed up in New York State in the United States.

What is not in doubt is that Adwoa Safo may not have a problem if she loses the seat to anybody in a free and fair election.
