An Accra Circuit Court granted bail to Francis Addey (35), alias Kofi Kyei, a motorcycle rider, and Amos Duah (39), an electrician, both accused of stealing and trafficking Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) prepaid meters. Each was granted bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties each, required to present valid national IDs. They pleaded not guilty and will reappear on April 22, 2025.
The prosecution, led by Police Inspector Hagar Owusu-Henabah and Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, detailed a sophisticated operation. Addey, residing in Ablekuma, allegedly conspired with a fugitive electrician, Fred, to steal meters. In August 2024, Fred stole a meter (PIN 000035737829) which was passed to Addey and then Duah, who sold it for GH¢2,500. A sting operation, facilitated by Duah’s cooperation, led to Addey’s arrest on February 11th, 2025, during a controlled delivery of two more stolen meters (P181032280 and P181032277). Two meters and meter cards were recovered as evidence.
The ECG’s Amasaman Branch Monitoring Officer initiated the complaint following routine inspections. The investigation continues, focusing on apprehending Fred and identifying all affected customers with the assistance of the ECG’s Customer Service Department. The case highlights the vulnerability of ECG infrastructure and the lengths to which criminals go to exploit it. The high bail amounts suggest the court views the crime seriously, reflecting the significant financial losses inflicted upon the electricity company and its customers.
