As the countdown to Ghana’s 2024 elections intensifies, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a stern warning to politicians: cease assaults on journalists. This admonition comes in the wake of increasing tensions and the tendency of some political figures to exploit the press’s forbearance during heated political climates.
Albert Dwumfour, President of the GJA, delivered this crucial message on Wednesday at the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra. He underscored the importance of safeguarding the press in a democracy, highlighting that any physical or verbal attacks on journalists will be met with serious consequences.
“In the lead-up to the elections, we must remember that a healthy democracy depends on the free and fair press. As Barack Obama so wisely stated, we need strong institutions, not just strong individuals. It is imperative for politicians to understand that taking aggression toward journalists is unacceptable,” Dwumfour emphasized.
The GJA’s concerns are particularly relevant as the political environment becomes more charged. The association has noted a worrying trend among some politicians who disregard the fundamental role journalists play in democratic discourse and instead resort to intimidation and violence.
In a call for accountability, Dwumfour announced that the GJA, in collaboration with a newly formed media coalition, is committed to exposing unprofessional and unethical behavior within the media landscape. He urged politicians with hostile tendencies to reconsider their approach: “If you lack the temperament to engage with journalists respectfully, we recommend you keep your distance. Hostility towards us will be met with equal hostility.”
As Ghana gears up for what promises to be a contentious election cycle, the GJA’s message serves as a crucial reminder of the need for mutual respect between politicians and the media. The association is committed to supporting journalists and ensuring their safety in the pursuit of truth and accountability in the democratic process.
