The scheduled Ghana Football Association congress slated on October 5, 2023, has been postponed due to a court-ordered adjournment related to the dispute between King Faisal Football Club and the football governing body.
The new date for the case is now set for Thursday, October 12, 2023.
Originally, the GFA had planned its Congress in Tamale for September 27, 2023. However, King Faisal applied for an injunction on the process, causing the committee to reschedule the assembly for early next month.
King Faisal, a relegated Ghana Premier League team, aims to maintain this restraint until elections for National League club representatives, Regional Football Associations, and related bodies are finalized.
Furthermore, King Faisal seeks to assert that a valid Congress cannot take place to elect the President until new representatives for the Executive Council (Exco) are duly elected.
The club also contends that opening nominations for the GFA President’s election before Exco elections are held is both incorrect and unlawful.
In addition, King Faisal, based in Kumasi, seeks a declaration that any resolution passed by the current Exco regarding the GFA President’s election before Exco representatives are chosen constitutes a breach of trust, confidence, and loyalty.
Following George Afriyie’s disqualification, Mr Okraku is set to continue his tenure as the FA President immediately after Congress. However, the outcome of the elections hinges on the Court’s ruling on this matter.
It is worth noting that George Afriyie has filed a case with CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) to challenge his disqualification from contesting the GFA presidency in the upcoming elections.
