Insight into Asante culture: Otumfuo on affection and unity

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has debunked the misconception that Asantes are self-centered and greedy. Addressing the issue during a recent gathering, Otumfuo emphasized that Asantes have always been affectionate towards other tribes and ethnic groups.

He cited historical examples and current relations to support his claim. “In the past, when we went to war, we never forced our rule on the people we conquered,” the King explained. “We allowed their leaders to continue ruling. If Asantes were greedy, why didn’t we impose our choices of leaders on them?”

Otumfuo further highlighted the presence of ethnic communities within Asante communities as evidence of their hospitality and inclusiveness. “You won’t find Anloga or Fante New Town anywhere in Asante,” he said. “We have Zongo and this has been emulated in other places now. We lived peacefully with these groups.”

The King concluded by emphasizing that Asantes are not greedy and that their history of co-existence with other ethnic groups is a testament to their hospitality.
