Residents of Kasoa and its environs have been warned about the increasing threat of rabies. The alarming rise in mortalities due to rabies has prompted Dr. Ransford Asante, a senior staff at the mother and child hospital in Kasoa, to issue a grave warning to the public.
Dr. Asante expressed deep concern over the escalating number of deaths caused by dog bites during a sensitization program held at the mother and child hospital on Tuesday. He urged the public health workers within the municipalities to take immediate action in educating the public about the dangers of dog bites and the importance of not taking such cases lightly. Dr. Asante emphasized that a mere dog bite could have fatal consequences and called for urgent measures to be taken to reduce the mortality rate.
Supporting Dr. Asante’s warning, Dr. Rosemond Aboagye, a senior radiologist at Ridge Hospital and the executive director for Rand Medical Imaging and Health Systems, also highlighted the grave dangers of ignoring dog bites as a normal occurrence. She urged parents to reconsider their views on dog bites and stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for their children. Dr. Aboagye emphasized that the chances of survival decrease significantly when cases of dog bites are reported late. She also called on public health workers to intensify their efforts in educating the public about rabies and its prevention.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is primarily transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, with dogs being one of the main carriers of the disease. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal.
