Liberia Camp highway property owners demand fair compensation

  • Post category:National

The  government’s ambitious road construction project along the Liberia Camp and Winneba Highway in the central region has been met with resistance from property owners who claim they have not been fully compensated for the land acquired for the road expansion. The affected landowners, numbering over 200, allege that the compensation offered by the government is significantly below the market value of their properties, leaving them financially disadvantaged. The government, on the other hand, maintains that the compensation packages were determined through a fair and transparent process, taking into account factors such as land size, location, and development potential.

According to a spokesperson for the affected property owners, the government’s compensation offer falls short of covering the costs of acquiring alternative land, constructing new homes, and relocating their businesses. They argue that the government should have conducted a thorough assessment of the impact of the road construction on their livelihoods and provided adequate compensation to mitigate the losses they will incur. The landowners have threatened legal action if the government does not revise its compensation packages and address their concerns.

The government has responded by stating that it is committed to ensuring that all affected property owners are fairly compensated. However, it has also emphasized the importance of the road construction project for the overall development of the country, arguing that it will improve transportation, boost economic activity, and create jobs. The government has appealed to the property owners to cooperate with the project and accept the compensation packages offered, which it claims are in line with international standards.

The dispute between the government and the property owners has highlighted the challenges of balancing the need for infrastructure development with the rights of individuals whose properties are affected by such projects. The case underscores the importance of transparent and fair compensation processes, as well as the need for effective communication and engagement between the government and affected communities.
