The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is embroiled in fresh controversy following disparaging comments by Dela Edem, a member of John Mahama’s national campaign team, aimed at former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Edem’s inflammatory remarks during a broadcast on TV ZXY, an NDC-affiliated station, have raised questions about the party’s position.
On air, Edem bluntly stated that former President Kufuor’s current wheelchair confinement is a consequence of his “evil deeds” during his time in office. He asserted, “We all saw your bad governance, so don’t think we have forgotten. Your evil deeds have now kept you in the wheelchair.” This vitriolic outburst came in reaction to Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, as the best option to lead Ghana against Mahama.
Edem further alleged that Kufuor’s administration was plagued by incompetence and corruption, claiming the former president had “hoarded Ghanaians’ money” following the change in currency.
This disrespectful display was only intensified by the show’s host, Mugabe Maase, who joined in the mockery, seemingly supporting Edem’s comments rather than curbing them.
Given these developments, one must wonder, where does the NDC leadership stand? Is their conspicuous silence a tacit endorsement of such maligning rhetoric against a former leader of the nation?
