In a bid to affirm democratic principles ahead of the upcoming 2024 elections, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a direct appeal to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Mahama emphasized that the president must commit to a peaceful transfer of power, regardless of the election outcome.
Speaking to supporters, Mahama asserted, “It is not in his mouth to determine who he will hand over to.” He urged the president to promise that he would respect the will of the Ghanaian people and ensure a smooth transition to whoever emerges victorious in the elections. “Please tell [President Akufo-Addo], he should just promise that when the elections are held, whoever wins he will hand over.”
Mahama’s statements come in light of remarks made by President Akufo-Addo at a recent rally, where he expressed hesitance over transferring power to Mahama, whom he has defeated in previous elections. In response, Mahama underscored the importance of the people’s choice, stating, “You can’t say you won’t hand over to John Mahama if the people of Ghana say John Mahama is who they want and they elect me.”
As the political landscape in Ghana heats up, Mahama’s call for a commitment to democratic norms reflects growing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the principles of governance that guide the nation. The upcoming elections will not only determine the future leadership of Ghana but also test the resilience of its democratic institutions.
