Otumfuo launches “Heal KATH Project” to raise $10M for renovation

  • Post category:Ashanti-news

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has embarked on a mission to raise $10 million to renovate the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. The initiative, known as “The Heal Komfo Anokye Project,” was officially launched on Sunday, October 15, 2023, during the Akwasidae festival.

KATH, Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital, is in urgent need of infrastructural improvements to better serve the healthcare needs of the Ashanti Region. With the hospital receiving referrals from 12 out of the 16 regions in Ghana, the renovation project aims to address the pressing need for upgraded facilities and expanded capacity to accommodate the growing demand for quality healthcare.
The fundraising effort was brought to the attention of a delegation from Tennessee in Memphis, USA, who joined the festival. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II personally informed the delegation about his mission to raise $10 million for the renovation of KATH. He emphasized that this cause is dear to his heart and is part of his broader mission to improve healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.

Oheneba Boachie-Adjei , Otumfuo Hiahene, conveyed the King’s message to the delegation, stating, “His Majesty has a special request and this is dear to his heart. It has to do with Komfo Anokye, the great high priest in Kumasi, named after the teaching hospital which was built 70 years ago. It is in dire need of renovation. He has organized a team to raise $10 million to renovate the hospital wards and the extension. Your support and contribution to this project would be greatly appreciated.”

The decision to launch the fundraising project was made in August when a delegation from KATH, led by its CEO Prof Otchere Addai-Mensah, presented a comprehensive proposal to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The proposal outlined the technical and financial aspects of the renovation project, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructural improvements in KATH. The hospital, which is Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital and receives referrals from 12 out of the 16 regions of Ghana, is currently facing significant challenges due to its deteriorated state.
