The Afrancho district police commander, Chief Inspector George Kwabena Osei, has received heartfelt praise from factions of the Otumfuo Kunafuohene and the royal family of Afrancho in the Afigya-Kwabre South of the Ashanti Region for exercising leadership in a dispute that appeared to be escalating and posing a threat to national security.
The quick involvement of the District Police Commander, whose wise counsel soothed tempers, prevented a tumultuous scene from developing during the burial of a corpse thought to be a member of the Afrancho royal line.
Ashantibiz learned that the Chief of Afrancho had forbidden the residents from interring their dead at a cemetery close to the town’s police station because it is more convenient.
However, several groups within the municipality and those of the Otumfuo Kunafuohene did not agree with this decree. Thus, Otumfuo Kunafuohene angrily pledged to call the Elders’ and the Chief of Afrancho’s bluff. To bury his dead, he gathered his troops over the weekend and went to the prohibited cemetery. Over the weekend, factions from both sides gathered at the cemetery to demonstrate their strength, but the district commander’s prompt intervention brought the tumultuous scenario under control. As a result, he got praise from both factions for his professionalism and leadership.
