The Sekondi High Court presided over by Justice Dr Richmond Osei Hwere has reaffirmed Dorcas Affo-Toffey as the duly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jomoro Constituency.
This was after the high court dismissed a petition challenging her eligibility to contest the 2020 parliamentary election in Jomoro, one of the constituencies in the Western Region.
News of dismissal of the petition was disclosed by Joyce Bawa Mogtari on Monday, November 21, 2022 on her Facebook wall.
Mrs Bawa Mogtari, who is an aide to former President Mahama, wrote “We won Jomoro. Petition dismissed”. Marrietta Brew, Former AG! Edudzi T! Thank you”.
Background
After the 2020 Parliamentary election results for Jomoro were declared in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Dorcas Affo-Affey by Electoral Commission, one Joshua Emuah Kofie, a resident of the area, filled a petition at the Sekondi High Court challenging the eligibility of the announced winner.
Mr Kofie alleged that the MP was holding American and Ivorian citizenships, a situation he argued violates the 1992 Constitution.
Dorcas Affo-Affey however denied the allegations in part, saying she only had an Ivorian citizenship, which has even been renounced.
The Sekondi High Court began the full trial of the case on June 6 after the case management conference ended on April 11, 2022.
