Taking more alcohol to cure hangover is a myth – Medical Expert

Dr. Ernest Anim-Opare, a Medical Practitioner at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has dismissed a long-held belief amongst alcohol consumers that a further intake of alcohol when one is hit by a hangover cures the condition.

According to him, contrary to the assertion that one gets free from hangover upon a reintroduction of alcohol, the move further increases the levels of toxic concentration in one’s system.

Speaking on GTV Breakfast Show monitored by Ashantibiz, Dr. Anim-Opare said “Many people actually think that when one has hangover, they need to be reintroduced to alcohol. In one sense somebody will say it makes some sense but it is actually the opposite. One of the contributing factors to hangover is that your body gets increased level of the toxic breakdown of the alcohol. So in trying to get alcohol to sedate you or get you a bit calm, you are actually introducing more alcohol that leads to the toxic level. The more you take the alcohol you may feel better in a period of time but it also increases the toxic effect of the alcohol which is called acetaldehyde”.

Dr Ernest Anim-Opare further stated that hangovers usually begin several hours after taking the last sop of alcohol, usually spanning between 8 to 24 hours. The symptoms can vary in intensity, depending on the person and the type and amount of alcohol consumed.

While recounting severe conditions of hangover that are often reported to health facilities, he disclosed that hangovers in their worse forms can lead to seizures as a result of low sugar levels and dehydration.
