The Formed Police Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, in an intelligence-led operation at Atwima Yabi, shot two suspected armed robbers; one died on the spot while the other fled with a gunshot on Wednesday August 10, at about 2:00am.
According to our source, the FPU night petrol team had information that some young men suspected to be robbers with flash light, had mounted a road-block with firewood and stones and were attacking drivers plying on the Atwima Yabi highway.
The suspects who are believed to be Fulanis opened fire at the police upon arrival and in an exchange one of the robbers died on the spot.
Three of the suspects managed to escape but another one, who sustained gunshot wounds, was tracked upon a tip-off to his hideout in a nearby village on August 13 at about 10:00am. He opened fire at the police upon seeing them but, also died in the process of fire exchange.
Police suspect that some of the gang members who escaped might have sustained gunshot wounds and, therefore, appealing to the public to volunteer information on anyone seen in or around Atwima Yabi with noticeable gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
Health facilities in and around Atwima Yabi are requested to immediately report the presence of any individual or group of people with gunshot wounds to the police.
The bodies of the two have been conveyed to the morgue for identification, preservation and autopsy.
