The police administration has cautioned personnel of the service against keeping suspects behind bars for more than 48 hours.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustine Kingsley Oppong, the Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, personnel who detained suspects for more than 48 hours infringe on their rights (suspects) and that could land officers in serious trouble.
“Any police officer who detained a suspect for more than 72 hours could find himself in trouble and the law would not spare such officer”, ASP Oppong stated during an interview on Ark FM’s morning show.
Police officers must therefore ensure suspects are arraigned before court within the 48-hour stipulated time.
ASP Oppong further indicated a bail on suspect did not guarantee the suspect’s freedom while investigations continued.
“Some suspects sometimes misconstrued their bail terms. But a bail on s suspect doesn’t guarantee his or her freedom until the docket is close”, he told Ark FM’s Kwabena Obeng Akrofi.
ASP Oppong said it was also illegal for police officers to extort monies before granting bail to suspects, saying the police administration would not tolerate officers who do so, and advised the public to be bold and report such officers to the police.
“We would not take it kindly with any officer who will take money from suspect before granting him or her bail because such practice contravenes the law”, he stated
