Students at Odupong Senior High School in the Awutu Senya East Municipality on Wednesday, February 28, had the privilege of hearing the inspiring life story of Dr. Rosemond Aboagye. Dr. Aboagye, the Executive Director of Rand Medical Imaging and Health Systems and a senior paediatric radiologist at Ridge Hospital in Accra, has made it her mission to motivate students in senior high schools throughout the region with her own journey from growing up in the slums of Korle Gonno in Accra.
As the eldest of five siblings, Dr. Aboagye faced numerous challenges that could have easily derailed her dream of becoming a medical doctor. However, her unwavering determination, hard work, and refusal to give up allowed her to overcome the obstacles in her path.
She shared a particularly poignant moment from her past when she had to survive on seed yams meant for planting at her father’s place in Konongo, Ashanti Region, after being sent home from school due to unpaid fees. At just seven years old, she joined her mother’s kenkey business to help make ends meet. Despite facing ridicule and discouragement from others, she remained steadfast in her pursuit of her dream.
“Throughout my days in secondary school and university, I made a conscious decision to prioritise my education and personal growth over dating,” she said in response to a question about dating during those challenging academic periods. “I realised that dating could divert me from my objectives, therefore in order to secure my academic achievement, I made the decision to concentrate only on my academics”, she added.
Dr. Aboagye has visited some schools in the region, including Amanfro SHS in Kasoa, and Senya SHS in Senya, to share her inspiring story and encourage students to persevere in the face of adversity. Her message of resilience, hard work, and determination serves as a beacon of hope for students striving to achieve their own dreams.
